Nón lá - Portraits

(photography series)

Winchester, England

2015

Initial studio response to my first visit to Vietnam as a British Vietnamese Tourist and as an Artist on holiday. ‘Nón lá’ a Vietnamese Conical Hat, a traditional and recognisable symbol of Vietnamese people. This style of hat is used primarily as protection from the sun and rain, sometimes used to scoop water or to hold. Today conical hats are also considered a special gift for travellers visiting Vietnam.

Balancing Act

'Ho Chi Minh commemoration foundation stone'

(Impromptu performance - Mobile Phone Film Footage)

Newhaven, East Sussex. UK

2020

The search for a British Vietnamese connection on the shores of England, a pilgrimage to Newhaven in East Sussex, was an opportunity to seek out the controversial monument of Ho Chi Minh. The President of North Vietnam from 1945 to 1969. It commemorates his brief visit to Newhaven in 1913 as a pastry chef on the Newhaven-Dieppe (France) ferry line. The monument is positioned opposite to the ferry port, looking over the ferries pulling in.

'NGUYEN'

(Part 1 : 2022)

A short video base on the Artist, KIMVI's surname, 'NGUYEN', is an ongoing personal project of her identity as a British Vietnamese artist, exploring the continuous mispronunciation of her common Vietnamese surname. The short video was made possible by a community of international participants. Some were friends, artists, and others were strangers, responding to an open call the artist placed on social media. Asking for submission of their pronunciation of the surname, and how they imagine it would sound from reading ‘NGUYEN’ out loud and recorded on their mobile phones.

.The video presents a collection of mispronunciations where in-between the voices contain the correct pronunciation. The video gives the listeners the opportunity to hear which one could be the right "NGUYEN'

.

The video was created for Vietnamese Artist, Moi Tran
