What is Peace?

Peace is fragile. Peace, as a concept.

‘VASE FOR PEACE’ names both the object and the condition. It is a fragile vessel, a shared responsibility, and a fleeting equilibrium. The title holds the whole performance: peace as something we must continually hold, support, and attend to, knowing it can shatter at any moment. Inspired by the Chinese partial phonetic of 花瓶 (huā píng), meaning “vase,” and 和平 (hé píng), meaning “peace,”

The performance was created in the emotional turmoil of the twelve months leading to its conception. Before the performance existed, its impact was already present: global conflict, war, and suffering; the passing of my godmother; attending her funeral and carrying her coffin; and the decision to stage a fragile, live act inside an art fair. These experiences gave the performance its emotional truth, its urgency, and its physical form. The coffin taught me what it means to bear weight, to support what is precious, and to accompany someone with care. The war made peace feel urgent and collective, not abstract. The art fair made the work public, exposed, and precarious. The year of grief made silence, stillness, and balance necessary. I asked myself: What is my statement? What is worth saying? What would the performance embody? The impact before the performance matters because it turns the act from a formal balancing into a mourning ritual, a political meditation, and a warning.
