Coppiced Charcoal
Mottisfont, National Trust
Hampshire. UK
2016
Charcoal used is coppiced locally in the surrounding Hampshire woodland areas of Mottisfont Abbey. The installation consists of lumps of coppiced charcoal arranged into a path directly onto the floor, extending from the entrance towards the interior rear window of 'The Observatory'. The artist studio situated temporarily in the grounds of Mottisfont Abbey. The artist creates a contemplated environment inside and outside of the studio by the process of the material display. It is the space itself which is being shown, transformed both by the quantity and nature of the material itself. Inspired by British Sculptor Richard Long's arrangements of natural materials and Minimalist Artist Carl Andre, who redefined the idea of sculpture and place through his process of 'using the material to cut into space, rather than cutting into the material itself'.
Micro Artist in Residence 'The Observatory' at The National Trust, Mottisfont Abbey. In association with SPUD Charity, working in partnership with Chapel Arts Studio, Andover and Test Valley Arts Foundation.
